AI & Technology Division

Harnessing artificial intelligence, software engineering, and data science to solve Africa’s most pressing development challenges — at scale, in local languages, and with open-source principles.

Division Overview

Technology Built for Africa, by Africans

Technology has the power to leapfrog decades of development challenges — but only when it is designed for the people who will use it. SATAF’s AI & Technology Division builds tools that work in low-bandwidth environments, local languages, and resource-constrained settings.

From AI-powered health navigation to geospatial data analysis and open-source software, our technology work is always in service of a real human problem. We build with communities, not just for them.

Our Work

Technology Initiatives & Tools

Flagship AI Platform

AfyaConnect AI

An integrated agentic AI health platform providing multilingual health navigation (Hausa, Fulfulde, English), smart emergency dispatch, and diaspora doctor network for northern Nigeria. Built on Google Gemini and Vertex AI.

Natural Language Processing

Hausa & Fulfulde Language Tools

Building open-source NLP corpora and fine-tuned language models for Hausa and Fulfulde — two major low-resource African languages with limited existing AI support. Our work enables conversational AI and text analysis in these languages.

Data & Analytics

Geospatial Health & Water Mapping

Using GIS, satellite data, and community surveys to map water access, disease burden, and health facility coverage across northern Nigeria. Our maps inform government resource allocation and SATAF project targeting.

Government Technology

Health Intelligence Dashboard

Designing real-time health data dashboards for state government health planners, showing disease surveillance patterns, facility utilisation, resource allocation needs, and population health trends across Gombe State.

Open Source

Open-Source Software Contributions

All major SATAF technology outputs are open-sourced under permissive licenses (Apache 2.0 / MIT). This includes the AfyaConnect platform, language models, deployment playbooks, and clinical AI safety evaluation frameworks.

Consulting

Tech-for-Good Advisory

Providing technical advisory services to NGOs, government agencies, and development organisations seeking to implement AI, data analytics, and digital health solutions in African contexts. We help organisations avoid common pitfalls in AI deployment.

Flagship Project

AfyaConnect AI — Technical Overview

Technology Stack
01
Google Gemini Pro
Core health navigation agent — multilingual conversation, symptom analysis, and facility routing across three languages.
02
Vertex AI (Google Cloud)
Enterprise-grade infrastructure for model deployment, monitoring, and scaling. Ensures reliability for a health-critical application.
03
Fine-tuned Language Models
Hausa and Fulfulde language models fine-tuned using ~2M text samples collected and curated by the SATAF team.
04
Google Maps Platform
Real-time facility routing and geolocation for directing patients to the nearest appropriate health facility.
Responsible AI Principles
I
Human Oversight
Critical health decisions include human-in-the-loop validation. The AI recommends; a health worker confirms for serious cases.
II
Privacy by Design
All patient data de-identified at collection, encrypted in transit and at rest. Compliant with Nigeria’s NDPA 2023.
III
Fairness & Equity
Regular bias audits across gender, age, ethnicity, and language to ensure equitable service delivery to all users.
IV
Open Source
Platform codebase, language models, and deployment playbooks published under Apache 2.0 for the global development community.
Google.org Impact Challenge: AfyaConnect AI is a finalist application in the Google.org Impact Challenge for AI for Government Innovation, requesting $3,000,000 USD to deploy across 50 health facilities in Gombe State, targeting 3.5 million citizens in the pilot phase.
